The experience

This is the expedition serious travelers ask for by name. Bromo first: the full sunrise ritual, sea of clouds and smoking crater. Then the road east, across coffee country and clove-drying villages, to the foot of Mount Ijen.

Ijen's midnight trail leads to something almost nobody on Earth gets to see: flames of burning sulfur dancing blue against the dark — a phenomenon only two places on the planet produce. As dawn lifts, the fire gives way to the world's largest acid crater lake, turquoise and steaming at 2,300 meters. You'll descend past the sulfur miners climbing up, loads of 80 kilograms on their shoulders.
